BRAND ANALYSIS & EXTENSION FOR VIVIENNE WESTWOOD
Modern Dandyism

Vivienne Westwood is known for the use of vibrant, daring colors paired with structured tailoring. Her designs have always challenged conventional norms, much like the expression of Black identity through dandy fashion. The bright hues evoke a sense of rebellion and resistance, reinforcing the idea that fashion is both a statement and a form of liberation.
Inspiration & Color Palette
This project is inspired by the Zoot Suit, a distinctive fashion style and powerful emblem of cultural pride and defiance against racism and prejudice in the 1940’s. The color palette I selected was inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s Catwalk book.
My Design Process
PATTERN MAKING, SKETCH, DRAPE & FINAL PIN
Making of the Pattern
STEP ONE
The original tartan pattern of the Vivienne Westwood Catwalk book was the jumping off point for my custom abstract pattern.
STEP TWO
This is the blueprint/map for my new custom abstract pattern.
STEP THREE
I reassigned colors to pay homage to the Vivienne Westwood Catwalk book.
STEP FOUR
Using Illustrator, I created a plaid symbol, pulling apart the pieces to form an original abstract design.
STEP FIVE
I used a clipping mask to create a perfect repeating pattern, easy to upload as a Spoonflower print.
Early Sketches
Draping the Exaggerated Shoulder
Final Flats & Pinned Mannequin
A modernized suit dress made of structured white cotton and a custom-lined lapel featuring an abstract pattern inspired from the classic Vivienne Westwood plaid.
